Greg Cohen
Principal Percussion
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Gregory Cohen began studying percussion in elementary school with Chris Treloar. While in high school, Greg was an active participant in all aspects of musical life including the All State Orchestra, Band, and Jazz Band. Also, while in high school, Greg was the national winner of the Music Teacher's National Association Performance Competition for percussion.
After high school, Greg received a scholarship to Boston University to study with Tim Genis of the Boston Symphony. While at BU, Greg was honored to receive a scholarship from the Avedis Zildjian Company. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance Magna Cum Laude in 2002, Greg continued his musical studies at the New England Conservatory with Will Hudgins of the Boston Symphony; he received his Master of Music Degree with Academic Honors in Percussion Performance in 2004.
While in school, Greg spent his summers at music festivals here and abroad including the National Orchestral Institute, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Center.
Greg has worked with many orchestras including the Pacific Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Greg is currently the Principal Percussionist of the San Diego Symphony and currently resides in San Diego. In his free time, Greg enjoys teaching and sailing the fine waters of San Diego Bay.
